Italy Clinches Deal With EU Over Measures to Limit Gas Prices' Impact on Electricity Costs

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Italy said on Friday, October 16, it had clinched a deal with European Union authorities over measures to limit the impact of sky-high gas prices on electricity costs for households and businesses. The office of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a statement that the measures are in line with EU state aid rules and that Rome will act to preserve equal conditions in the internal market.

"Italy will notify the Commission of the temporary measures in accordance with EU state aid rules, and the Commission will assess them as a matter of priority," the statement said. It did not explain the terms of the agreement.

Against a backdrop of high European energy prices, the deal clears the EU-level procedural path for Rome to act on power bills. The scale and coverage of the measures will depend on the scheme Italy formally notifies to Brussels. Household and business electricity bills are among the main cost-of-living issues facing Meloni's government. (GSM, based on Reuters reporting)
