Peru President Fujimori's Approval Falls to 28.3% Amid Economic and Crime Concerns

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

The approval rating of Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori fell to 28.3% in early October, down 14.5 percentage points from the previous month, according to LatAm Pulse, a survey conducted by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg News. Disapproval rose to 53.6%, up about 13 points. Fujimori took office at the end of July after narrowly winning a runoff in her fourth bid for the presidency, having promised to restore order in a country that has had nine leaders in a decade.

Nearly two-thirds of Peruvians, 62%, consider the economy to be poor, compared with 22% who consider it good, and 64% said the job market is weak. All three indicators worsened from the previous month, and only Argentina shows worse economic sentiment than Peru among the region's largest economies, according to AtlasIntel.

The gloomier outlook likely reflects a worsening El Niño forecast, with the phenomenon projected to be the strongest ever recorded. Peru's central bank has cut its 2026 growth forecast to 3.2% as El Niño affects agriculture and fishing while fueling inflation, which has surpassed the 3% target ceiling for seven consecutive months.
