Rwanda Mourns Legendary Singer Suzanne Nyiranyamibwa, Dead at 83

Rwanda has lost one of its most enduring voices. Suzanne Nyiranyamibwa, celebrated for her Liberation and Kwibuka (remembrance) songs, died on Friday, October 16, 2026, after an illness. She was 83.
Nyiranyamibwa's songs are woven into Rwanda's collective memory: her liberation repertoire chronicles the country's history, while her remembrance songs are widely sung during the annual Kwibuka commemorations, comforting survivors and honouring the dead. News of her death prompted mourning nationwide.
Funeral and official commemoration arrangements are expected to be announced by her family and cultural institutions. The Kwibuka commemoration period begins each April and lasts 100 days, honouring the victims of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. (GSM, based on Top Africa News reporting)
