South Korea Youth Employment Slump Deepens as September Jobs Fall by 147,000

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

South Korea's youth employment slump deepened in September, with the number of employed people aged 15 to 29 falling by 147,000 from a year earlier and the youth employment rate dropping 1.1 percentage points to 44.0%, according to official data cited by the Seoul Economic Daily. The figures came even as overall employment hit a record rate and manufacturing jobs rebounded.

Kim Sung-hee, a professor at Korea University's Graduate School of Labor Studies, said non-regular employment remains widespread and that the structural problem persists in which employment rises among older workers while it declines among young people.

Lawmakers from the National Assembly's Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee will visit the Hyundai Motor and Kia Namyang Research and Development Center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, on October 20, where Vice Chairman Jaehoon Chang is expected to brief them on autonomous driving, robotics, hydrogen commercial vehicles and batteries. Bills to support future mobility industries, including subsidies for fully autonomous vehicles, remain pending in the Assembly. (GSM, based on Seoul Economic Daily reporting)
