Switzerland Advances Bid to Host 2038 Winter Olympics with Senate Committee Backing

Switzerland is preparing a bid to host the 2038 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Following approval by the House of Representatives, the Senate's Committee on Science, Education and Culture has backed the proposal by 10 votes to 0, with 2 abstentions, according to a statement issued by parliament on Friday. The proposal provides for federal financial support of up to CHF 200 million (about $242 million), and the committee made clarifications to the draft regarding funding and cantonal participation.
A privileged dialogue between the International Olympic Committee and Switzerland allows the country to prepare its bid without competition until the end of 2027. If the bid meets the IOC's requirements, Switzerland will be awarded the Games, with a decision expected at the IOC's spring session in 2027.
The Games would be held in a decentralised manner across Switzerland's four linguistic regions, with no new construction projects, and must meet the highest standards of sustainability, transparency and governance. The plan does not envisage a referendum. Switzerland last hosted the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz in 1948. (GSM, based on Swiss national broadcaster and Keystone-SDA reports)
