Michigan Directs About $23 Million to Infrastructure and Workforce Projects, Including $10.5 Million Detroit Readiness Center

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a round of investments totaling about $23 million in infrastructure and workforce projects across Michigan, funded through the Make it in Michigan Competitiveness Fund. "Let's keep working together to grow our economy and help people 'make it' in Michigan," Whitmer said.

The awards include $10.5 million to the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for constructing a new Readiness Center at the Olympia National Guard Armory in Detroit; $3.5 million to KMI Space for spacecraft development; $2.5 million to the City of Detroit for expanding the Joe Louis Greenway; and $2 million through a University of Michigan partnership focused on nuclear workforce training. The round also includes funds for a library renovation in Ionia, improvements at Monroe's port, pending awards supporting L'Anse Port expansion, planning work on capping I-75 in downtown Detroit, and advancing West Michigan's agricultural economy.

Kevin Mehren, director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office, said the awards deliver more than $5 in federal funding for every state dollar, a strong return for Michigan taxpayers that also keeps critical work moving forward. The Governor's Office said the Michigan Infrastructure Office has helped secure over $16 billion in federal funding covering roads, bridges, transit systems and broadband access statewide since its establishment, and that the Competitiveness Fund has invested over $320 million so far with an almost 10-to-1 return ratio when leveraged federal investments and private contributions are combined.
