Nevada Seeks $2.3 Million in Federal Funds to Expand 988 Crisis Response Capacity

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · States · GSM News

Nevada's Division of Public and Behavioral Health is asking the state Legislature's Interim Finance Committee (IFC) for $2,307,533 in federal revenue and spending authority to improve local 988 crisis response capacity. The request, work program C83881 for the Nevada 988 Capacity and Integration Project, was on the IFC's October 15 meeting agenda.

According to the packet submitted to the IFC, a notice of award from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) establishes $2,307,533 for the project's funded budget period, to be added to budget account 3165, the Crisis Response account. The spending schedule names Carelon Behavioral Health and NAMI among the entities involved. The IFC met on October 15 in Las Vegas, with simultaneous observation and testimony available in Carson City, and written comments could be submitted to the committee by email.

The 988 number is the nationwide Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the United States. The state said in its request that the federal funding seeks stronger crisis-contact capacity and coordination; contract execution, county-by-county service coverage and a sustainable long-term funding plan will be determined as the committee acts and implementation proceeds.
