Texas Announces $78 Million in Rural Healthcare Grants for 216 Providers

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · States · GSM News

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced in Austin on October 15 that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) plans to award $78 million in Rural Texas Strong grants to 216 rural healthcare providers across the state.

"Every Texan deserves access to high-quality healthcare, no matter where they live," Abbott said. "This $78 million investment will help rural healthcare providers strengthen facilities, address chronic diseases, and recruit and retain the next generation of healthcare professionals." Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said CMS is proud to work with states like Texas to deliver locally driven solutions as part of President Trump's Rural Health Transformation Program. HHSC Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said rural providers know their communities best.

The $78,089,434.73 announced is part of the $281,319,360.67 first-year award HHSC received from the CMS Rural Health Transformation Program, under a state plan estimated at $1.4 billion in federal funding over five years, 100 percent federally funded. The money advances three initiatives: "Make Rural Texans Healthy Again," which helps rural hospital districts address diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and obesity; "Next Generation of the Small Town Doctor and Team," which supports recruiting, training and retaining physicians and emergency medical professionals; and "Infrastructure and Capital Investments for Rural Texas," which replaces aging equipment and improves facilities. HHSC said it will announce intended awards weekly as applications are reviewed, with funding available after contracts are finalized.
