Landry Weighs In on Louisiana Tech and Southern President Searches

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · States · GSM News

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said in an interview with the USA Today Network that he will not intervene in the initial search process for a new Louisiana Tech University president, and did not do so for the new Southern University System president, but he could weigh in on a final decision. 'I don't want to force feed any person. I want to hear from the stakeholders,' Landry said, adding, 'If they bring me a couple of names, I might have an opinion.'

Landry said he spoke with northern Louisiana legislators about the Tech job while in Ruston on October 12, telling the delegation 'to find the best person to handle the job.' Louisiana Tech is seeking a new leader after President Jim Henderson announced his retirement effective at the end of 2026, citing health concerns; applications for the job close November 6. State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley is widely speculated to be among the top candidates.

The Shreveport Times reported that Landry has elevated the governor's power over Louisiana's higher education boards through a recent law allowing him not only to appoint board members but also to select board chairs, and that he was active this year in LSU's football coaching hire and the firing of its previous athletic director.
