Maine Governor Mills Suspends Senate Campaign, Clearing Path for Platner

Maine Governor Janet Mills announced on Thursday, October 15, that she is suspending her campaign for the U.S. Senate, citing a lack of financial resources, and clearing the way for military veteran and oyster farmer Graham Platner in the Democratic primary ahead of a general election against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. 'While I have the drive and passion, commitment and experience, and above all else — the fight — to continue on, I very simply do not have the one thing that political campaigns unfortunately require today: the financial resources,' Mills said in a statement. 'That is why today I have made the incredibly difficult decision to suspend my campaign for the United States Senate.'
Mills, who launched her Senate campaign last October, had been backed by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and was touted as a top recruit. Platner, however, built major support among Maine Democrats, leading by double digits in recent polls of the primary and winning endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Maine is considered a must-win for Democrats seeking the four seats they need to take control of the Senate in the 2026 midterms, and Collins is the only Republican senator representing a state President Donald Trump lost in 2024. Mills will continue to serve as governor of Maine.
