Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Thursday, October 15, that the state is launching a new Space Innovation Hub based in Detroit, slated to officially launch on October 28, according to a Detroit Regional Chamber government roundup published October 16. The hub is a statewide network aimed at boosting Michigan's space technology economy, anchored at Newlab Detroit in Corktown's Michigan Central Innovation District.

The hub is funded by a $1.2 million one-year grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Its partners include the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center and the National Advanced Mobility Consortium. Kevin Cronin, Michigan Central's new executive director of aerospace, will manage the hub, and the team will include senior advisors with experience at SpaceX, Raytheon, NASA affiliates and the U.S. Department of Defense, the governor's office said.

'The Space Innovation Hub brings together industry, innovators, and our world-class manufacturing base to ensure Michigan is at the forefront of the next generation of space technologies and creating the jobs of tomorrow,' Whitmer said. Michigan is home to more than 900 aerospace companies employing about 30,000 workers, according to the Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan. The hub's top priorities include a 'sprint to supply space' initiative, year-round industry events and an annual Michigan space summit.
