North Dakota Officials Jumpstart Next Phase of Effort to Boost Bakken Oil Production

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · States · GSM News

North Dakota officials, oil industry leaders and U.S. Senator John Hoeven rallied support on October 16 for the second phase of an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) effort in the Bakken formation, the North Dakota Monitor reported. The technology injects gases such as carbon dioxide or natural gas into underground formations to repressurize reservoirs and extract trapped oil.

'At one time, we were producing 1.5 million barrels of oil a day. Now we're down to 1.1 million barrels a day, and that'll keep going down unless we do this enhanced oil recovery,' Hoeven said at a press conference hosted by the North Dakota Petroleum Council.

'That's an entire new oil boom without the infrastructure challenges,' said Gov. Kelly Armstrong. 'This isn't about the energy industry. This isn't about western North Dakota. This is about the whole state.'
