Rhode Island's Next Governor Likely to Inherit a Fight Over Flock Cameras

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · States · GSM News

The superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police is expected to give Gov. Dan McKee new recommendations on Monday on how cities and towns should use automated license plate reading cameras, Ocean State Media reported on October 16.

At least 300 Flock cameras are installed across Rhode Island. They record identifying details of every car that drives past, but the state has no uniform rules on who can see the data, how long it is kept, or what it can be used for.

McKee ordered the review in August, called for a pause on new installations, and gave state police 60 days to develop uniform statewide standards. 'We have to solve crimes. We also have to protect people's privacy. Those two things are not mutually exclusive,' McKee said at the time. Who will act on the recommendations remains unclear, as McKee is a lame duck.
