New 'Sense and Sensibility' Sets Jane Austen Adaptation Record With $6.7M Projected Debut

LOS ANGELES — Focus Features' new adaptation of 'Sense and Sensibility' is projected to earn about $6.7 million in its North American opening weekend, good for fifth place, according to Deadline tracking reported Saturday — the best domestic debut ever for a period-set Jane Austen adaptation, not adjusted for inflation.
Directed by Georgia Oakley from a screenplay by Diana Reid, the film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood, Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood, with Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay and Frank Dillane. It is the second big-screen adaptation of the 1811 novel after Ang Lee's 1995 version.
