Ventura Unified Sells Surplus Property for $6 Million Toward Educator Housing

VENTURA — The Ventura Unified School District board voted 5–0 on October 15 to sell the former Avenue School site at 2647 N. Ventura Ave for $6 million to Ventura Housing, which plans affordable housing for district educators. The district said the site closed in 1989 and was declared surplus in 2023.
It is the district's third such deal in recent months: in August the board approved sales of the Education Service Center property on Stanley Avenue and the former Washington Elementary School site on Macmillan Avenue for more than $45 million combined, both also including future employee housing units. Proceeds will support district facilities, while the district separately weighs school closures among its 26 campuses amid declining enrollment and budget deficits.
