Philadelphia Man Convicted in $2 Million Theft From New Jersey Business

CAMDEN — The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Ruben Cruz, 33, of Philadelphia, was convicted on October 15 in federal court in Camden, New Jersey, of conspiracy to transport stolen property across state lines, interstate transportation of stolen property, conspiracy to launder money, and seven counts of money laundering. U.S. Attorney Robert Frazer announced the verdict; sentencing is set for February 24, 2027.
According to court documents and trial evidence, over the 2021 July 4th holiday weekend Cruz and co-conspirator Ricky Rivas-Ortiz burglarized a Glassboro business, stealing a safe containing more than $2 million in money orders and cash and taking it to Philadelphia, then laundered the proceeds by altering money orders and depositing them piecemeal at neighboring banks. Rivas-Ortiz previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. U.S. District Judge Christine P. O'Hearn presided over the three-day trial.
