Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson Signs First-in-Nation Citywide Fair-Pricing Law for Groceries

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Seattle is a city in King County, Washington. Seattle Mayor Katie B. Wilson on October 5 signed Council Bill 121267, the Fair and Transparent Pricing policy, a first-in-the-nation city-led consumer protection measure designed to stop grocery retailers from using personal data to set different prices for different customers. Wilson signed the bill alongside Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck, Dionne Foster and Rob Saka, City Attorney Erika Evans and community members. The ordinance, sponsored by the three councilmembers, passed the Seattle City Council in September.

The law prohibits large grocers from using personal data, super intelligence, and information such as race, gender and social media data to set individualized prices for food products — a practice known as surveillance pricing. Broadly available discounts remain permitted. The restriction takes effect on September 1, 2027.

Speakers at the signing included Sean Embly, Secretary-Treasurer of UFCW 3000, and Maya Morales, founder of WA People's Privacy.
