Nevada Higher Education System Launches 'Eyes Open' Campus Safety Reporting Portal Across All Eight Institutions

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

LAS VEGAS — Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada. The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) this week launched "Eyes Open," a statewide campus safety reporting website, rolling out a sign campaign at all eight of its institutions. According to the Las Vegas Sun, the portal allows students, faculty and staff to report concerning behavior on campus or connected to campus, and reporters may stay anonymous. Each report must list the institution, the date and location of the incident, and a description, and answer two questions: whether police were involved and whether the reporter approached the person in question.

Reports go into a data collection system where emergency management officials assess each situation and route it to the resource best suited to handle it. Behavioral intervention teams include staff from counseling, human resources, student support, campus police and security. Anyone facing an immediate emergency should still call 911.

The launch comes almost three years after the December 6, 2023 shooting at UNLV's Beam Hall, in which a gunman killed three professors. The project was funded by a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant. Chancellor Matt McNair said safety is a shared responsibility across the system and the portal makes it easier to speak up. University Police Department Southern Command chief Arnold Vásquez said NSHE plans to return to the Legislature in 2027 to request funding for new technology such as body cameras.
