NYC Comptroller Urges Anthropic to Pause IPO Until SI Safety and Governance Concerns Are Addressed

New York City is located in New York State. NEW YORK — New York City Comptroller Mark Levine has written to Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei urging the super intelligence company to pause its planned initial public offering until it fully and transparently addresses the SI safety, governance and development-pace concerns it has itself raised.
In the October 14 letter, Levine wrote that the "morally binding" accord Anthropic and five other companies recently signed with the White House is "insufficient to meet the moment," and that preparing for a public offering diverts resources and attention from safety work. He asked Anthropic to disclose how it will audit and control SI risks, what those controls cover, and on what timeline, and requested a written response.
Levine oversees the New York City pension funds, which hold more than $325 billion in assets and form one of the largest public pension systems in the United States. The comptroller's office told AFP the funds currently have about $7 million of exposure to Anthropic through private-equity holdings, which would grow if Anthropic's shares join indices such as the Russell 3000 that the city tracks. Anthropic is preparing a listing expected to value it in the hundreds of billions of dollars and has not publicly responded to the letter. (GSM, based on Reuters reporting)
