NYC Moped Crews Snatching Gold Chains; Police Count More Than 20 Cases Since September

New York City is located in New York State. The New York Post reported on Oct. 18 that New York City has seen a string of robberies in which riders on mopeds or e-bikes snatch gold chains from pedestrians' necks, with at least 10 escalating into violent robberies. The NYPD confirmed more than 20 such "chain-snatch" cases since September.
The crews typically work in pairs, pulling up behind a pedestrian, tearing off the chain and speeding away. On Sept. 25, a 48-year-old man on West 145th Street in the Bronx had his chain ripped off by a masked moped rider. An unnamed law-enforcement source told the Post that some cases are linked to the Trinitarios gang, long active in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan.
The most serious case came earlier this month: an NYPD detective was stabbed 10 times while trying to stop two robbers. Nine other victims reported being beaten, stabbed or knocked to the ground during robberies. Police urge residents to stay alert when wearing valuable jewelry on the street; the investigation is ongoing.
