San Diego State Edges Fresno State 26-23 on a 53-Yard Field Goal in the Final Minute

San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. San Diego State beat Fresno State 26-23 at Snapdragon Stadium on the night of Saturday, Oct. 17, staging a comeback in the "Old Oil Can" rivalry game. Kicker Cooper DiLeva drilled a career-long 53-yard field goal with 57 seconds left to win it.

The Aztecs have endured a rough season: they were coming off a 66-14 loss to Oregon State and a mumps outbreak that sidelined multiple players. Starting quarterback Jayden Denegal left in the first half with an ankle injury (X-rays were negative) after going 7 of 10 for 110 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown pass. Running back Lucky Sutton returned from injury and sparked the rally with a 67-yard run early in the fourth quarter, then set up a 7-yard touchdown pass; the defense piled up six sacks and held Fresno State to 276 total yards. DiLeva also hit field goals of 32, 30 and 40 yards, accounting for the decisive points.

Fresno State had taken the lead late, but San Diego State held firm at the end. The win lifts head coach Sean Lewis's team out of the shadow of last week's blowout loss.
