Germany's Autumn Rail Works Begin: Closures and Diversions in Hamburg, Munich and Cologne

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Autumn construction work on Germany's railways gets under way this week, with Deutsche Bahn and regional transport authorities imposing closures and diversions at hubs including Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt from Oct. 19, German media reported. In Hamburg, sections of the U3 metro line are closed from Oct. 19 to 29, with replacement buses running instead; Munich's S-Bahn trunk route and regional lines around Cologne also face multi-day blockades, with some services cancelled or rerouted and commuters advised to allow extra time. Deutsche Bahn has been carrying out large-scale renewal of ageing infrastructure in recent years, and officials have repeatedly acknowledged pressure on network condition and punctuality; the autumn holiday period is a traditional window for concentrated works. The railway urged passengers to check the latest schedules on its website or the DB Navigator app before travelling, and to note station announcements and replacement-bus stop locations. Some long-distance trains are being diverted during the works, lengthening journey times; schedules and reopening dates are subject to official updates.
