UNC Asheville Launches School of Business, Proposes Three New Majors for Fall 2027

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina Asheville announced on October 16 the launch of its School of Business, bringing together the university's Department of Business and its Department of Economics & Finance in a single school aimed at deepening employer engagement and preparing students for careers.
The school currently offers bachelor's degrees in accounting, business and economics, and proposes three new majors — finance, marketing and business analytics — for fall 2027. Two certificates, in digital and social media marketing and in business intelligence and analytics, are available now, with further credentials in health care management, outdoor enterprise and risk management, plus Certified Financial Planning preparation, in development. Every student will complete a hands-on experience such as an internship, undergraduate research project or practicum with a local business, and a dedicated career coach is planned.
The school's learning labs are expanding as well: a Policy Lab is scheduled to open in January 2027 and the existing Super Intelligence Lab is being upgraded. The university cited the UNC System's 2026 Workforce Alignment Report, which identifies annual shortfalls of roughly 500 finance graduates and 1,000 accounting graduates in North Carolina relative to available positions.
"UNC Asheville's School of Business gives us a better way to engage with employers and help students prepare for those opportunities," said Roger Aiken, chair of the university's Board of Trustees. "We want businesses to have a voice in what we're building, so students graduate with skills they can use, and employers can find more of the talent they're looking for right here in our region." The university's student-to-faculty ratio is 14-to-1, and the school's page is live at unca.edu.
