John Paulson Gives $250 Million to Hebrew University, the Largest Donation in Its History

JERUSALEM — American investor and philanthropist John Paulson announced on the evening of October 17, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Board of Governors Gala, that he is giving $250 million to the university, the largest single donation in its history. Together with his previous gifts, Paulson's total support for the university reaches $296 million.
In recognition of the gift, the university's historic Mount Scopus campus will be named The Alina and John Paulson Campus, Mount Scopus, Jerusalem. The campus cornerstone was laid in 1918, and the university formally opened there in 1925; its founders included Albert Einstein.
The gift will support four strategic priorities: development of a new Faculty of Engineering, expansion of the university's medical and biomedical enterprise including its new model for medical education, trauma and post-trauma recovery research, and a new public impact and community think tank. Earlier Paulson Family Foundation gifts built the Paulson Bar-El Building for Computer Science and Engineering and the John Paulson Building for Electrical Engineering on the Edmond J. Safra Campus.
"I can think of no more deserving university for philanthropic support than Hebrew University," Paulson said, adding that the gift is also meant to show support and international solidarity with Israel. University President Prof. Tamir Sheafer said the contribution "empowers us to recruit world-class faculty, support exceptional students, equip cutting-edge laboratories."
Hebrew University ranked 89th globally in the 2026 Shanghai Ranking, has registered more than 10,750 patents, and counts ten Nobel Prizes among its associated honors.
