IRAPUATO, Mexico — Pastor Ángel González of Calvary Chapel Irapuato and his wife, Irán Montes, were killed by gunmen outside their home in Irapuato, Guanajuato state, in the early hours of Thursday, October 15, The Christian Post reported on October 17. González died at the scene; Montes, wounded in the same attack, died in an ambulance before reaching a hospital.

According to local media and Calvary Chapel Magazine, the attack happened around 1 a.m. in the Villas El Dorado neighborhood, near the garage of the couple's home, as they returned from a wake at which González had officiated. A man got out of another vehicle and fired from about a meter away at the couple in their car. Municipal police have detained a man as a suspected perpetrator; his name has not been released and authorities have not announced a motive. Reports indicate the available information points to a robbery that turned deadly, while relatives and friends await official findings.

The couple had two children, Matthew, 18, and Dorothy, 17. Calvary Chapel Irapuato belongs to the Calvary Chapel network of evangelical churches founded in California. The magazine said the congregation is heartbroken and Calvary Chapel families elsewhere in Mexico are in mourning, and it asked for prayers for the couple's children and the church. Guanajuato is among the Mexican states where several drug cartels operate and organized-crime violence has continued, according to the Associated Press.
