NASA's Perseverance Breaks Driving Record: 28.10 Miles Surpasses Opportunity

PASADENA, Calif. — NASA's Perseverance rover has become the farthest-driving explorer on another world. According to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the rover's odometer reached 28.10 miles on October 11, passing the 28.06-mile record set by the Opportunity rover.
Perseverance has now driven more than double its original mission planning limit of 12.4 miles. More than 90 percent of its distance has been covered using the AutoNav autonomous navigation system, compared with roughly 5 percent in Opportunity's era.
JPL project manager Steven Lee and deputy manager for robotic operations Mark Maimone said the rover is now heading toward the "Idubi" area on the western rim of Jezero Crater, where it will investigate traces of an ancient hydrothermal system to gather further evidence about early environments on Mars.
