KEY WEST, Fla. — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Isaac Mayo repatriated six people to Cuba following a maritime migrant interdiction and a disabled-boat rescue in the Florida Straits, the Coast Guard announced.

In the first case, Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders were notified by a CBP Air and Marine Operations aircrew of a rustic vessel southwest of Cay Sal. An Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew located the vessel, and the Cutter Raymond Evans embarked three Cuban men; one person was later medically evacuated to shore for a higher level of care. In the second case, on Sunday, an Air Station Miami aircrew located a disabled Cuban fishing vessel with four people aboard about 46 miles southeast of Key West, and the Isaac Mayo's crew rescued all four. Of the seven people taken aboard across the two cases, six were repatriated.

"Our crews remain vigilant in protecting our maritime borders while safeguarding lives at sea," said Capt. Aaron Ortenzio, commanding officer of Air Station Miami. "These cases demonstrate the Coast Guard's commitment to preventing unlawful maritime entry while responding to mariners in distress." Once aboard a cutter, interdicted people are processed to determine identity and are provided food, water, shelter and basic medical attention before disposition, the Coast Guard said.
