MLS: Gauld and Diaby Score After Halftime as West-Leading Whitecaps Rally to Beat Austin 2-1

Austin, Texas — The Vancouver Whitecaps rallied to beat Austin FC 2-1 in an MLS regular-season match at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night, before a crowd of 20,738 with Tori Penso as referee.

Myrto Uzuni put Austin ahead in the 40th minute, anticipating and intercepting a back pass from a Vancouver defender and finishing one-on-one against goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka for his seventh goal of the season. Two minutes into the second half, Ryan Gauld headed in a cross from Emmanuel Sabbi to equalize — his fourth goal in 16 appearances this season. In the 71st minute, Yadaly Diaby, who had come on as a substitute six minutes earlier, placed a shot from outside the penalty area into the top corner for the winner, his second goal in eight MLS matches.

Takaoka finished with four saves for Vancouver; Brad Stuver saved one shot for Austin. Western Conference-leading Vancouver (16-7-7) snapped a four-match winless streak, while Austin (7-13-10), who beat the Whitecaps 2-1 on the road last month, have gone 0-3-2 since. Both teams play again on Saturday, October 24: Vancouver visit the Colorado Rapids and Austin visit Sporting Kansas City.
