[Video] Sorkin's 'The Social Reckoning' Collapses in Its Second Weekend; $6.73 Million Total Makes Breaking Even Unlikely

The 2026 awards season took another hit: The Social Reckoning, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, collapsed at the box office in its second weekend, Oct. 16-18, taking in an estimated $1.55 million over three days, down roughly 69% to 75% from its opening weekend. Through Oct. 17, the film's North American total stood at only about $6.73 million, against a production budget estimated at about $30 million; theatrical revenue alone now has almost no chance of recouping it.

The Social Reckoning is a companion piece to the 2010 Oscar winner The Social Network, with Jeremy Strong succeeding Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, and centers on the conflict between Zuckerberg, whistleblower Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison) and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horowitz (Jeremy Allen White). The film opened on Oct. 9 to only about $5 million to $5.5 million.

It is the second straight commercial failure for an adult prestige drama this awards season. A week earlier, Tom Cruise's apocalyptic satire Digger also plunged 60% in its second weekend; Warner Bros. has begun pulling it from 2,535 theaters, with expected losses of about $200 million to $245 million. Industry watchers are questioning whether mid-to-high-budget dramas can still survive the current fall season.
