IMF Chief Georgieva Sums Up Three Areas of Consensus at Bangkok Annual Meetings: SI a Key Growth Driver, Global Divergence Widening

BANGKOK — International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in her closing summary at the 2026 Annual Meetings in Bangkok on October 17 that discussions on global economic resilience, the development of super intelligence and its risks, and global economic divergence had produced three main areas of consensus, according to Xinhua.
First, SI has become an important driver of economic growth, but over-reliance on a single growth engine carries risks, and the foundations of global economic resilience are being challenged. Second, global economic divergence is widening: countries not participating in the SI value chain, and energy-importing countries hit by war, face greater development pressure, and the dividends of global growth have not been shared evenly. Third, SI is developing rapidly and today's policy choices will profoundly shape its future course; participants broadly agreed that while unlocking SI's benefits, safeguards must be built, risks managed, and cooperation strengthened among governments, businesses and international institutions.
Georgieva also said the IMF had received more than $100 million in new capacity-development funding pledges from 10 partners during the meetings, to help countries strengthen policy capacity and economic resilience. The 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group ran from October 12 to 18 in Bangkok, drawing some 15,000 delegates from 191 countries and regions. (GSM, following Xinhua)
