Jay Chou Wraps Melbourne Stadium Show as Two Australian Stadium Dates Top 70,000 Fans

MELBOURNE — Jay Chou brought his Carnival world tour to Melbourne's Marvel Stadium on Oct. 17, becoming, by local accounts, the first Mandopop singer to headline a solo concert at the venue. The show sold out, drawing a crowd of roughly 60,000.
Together with an earlier stadium date in Sydney, Chou's two Australian stops drew more than 70,000 fans in total, with reports estimating combined box office of over US$20 million.
During rehearsals, Chou had worried that non-Chinese-speaking audiences might miss the imagery in his lyrics; after talking with fitness personality Will Liu, who accompanied the trip, he estimated the overwhelming majority of the crowd was Chinese. He performed the set in Mandarin as written, making no concessions to language.
On Oct. 18, Chou posted a bilingual message thanking the overseas Chinese students and workers in Melbourne, saying he hoped his music could make them feel 'a little closer to home' when homesickness strikes.
