Follow-Up: Takaichi Makes Second Ritual Offering to Yasukuni Shrine on Final Day of Autumn Festival

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made a second ritual offering to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine on Oct. 19, the final day of its autumn festival, providing 'tamagushi-ryo' offering fees without visiting in person, Kyodo News and South Korean media reported. It was her second offering during the festival, following a 'masakaki' offering on the opening day, Oct. 17. Yasukuni honours Japan's war dead, including World War II Class-A war criminals, and the shrine's twice-yearly festivals draw close attention from neighbouring countries over Japanese leaders' offerings or visits. South Korea's foreign ministry earlier expressed 'deep disappointment and regret' over Takaichi's offering on the first day. China's foreign ministry has repeatedly said the Yasukuni issue concerns Japan's attitude toward its history of aggression and urged Tokyo to honour its statements and commitments. GSM previously reported Takaichi's Oct. 17 offering in the name of 'Prime Minister of the Cabinet,' which opened the autumn festival, and Seoul's same-day response. Takaichi became Japan's first female prime minister in October 2025.
