LA Metro CEO Wins Four-Year Extension in 11-0 Board Vote, to Lead Through World Cup and Olympics

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) board voted 11-0 on Thursday to extend Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Wiggins' contract by four years, raising her annual salary to nearly $511,000. The extension keeps Wiggins at the helm as the agency prepares for two global events: the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

Metro Board Chair and Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said continuity of leadership is important as the events test the county's transit system, and that Metro is working to deliver a 'transit-first' Games. Board members said Wiggins should stay to deliver on the agency's promises, including more buses and extended train hours to move athletes and spectators between venues while easing freeway traffic.

Metro faced criticism over the past year after shootings, stabbings and a bus hijacking kept some riders away. Wiggins responded with more transit security officers, stronger fare enforcement, protective enclosures for bus drivers, more cleaning crews, station elevator repairs and additional Metro Transit Ambassadors. In March she reported ridership up just over 2 percent, a 28th straight month of growth.
