MACAO — The 13th MGM Cup International Lion Dance Championship was held in Macao this month, drawing 25 teams and more than 270 athletes from 13 countries and regions, including Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, Chinese Taipei, mainland China, Hong Kong, Canada, Australia and Macao. The competition featured four categories: high-pole southern lion, children's traditional southern lion, youth traditional southern lion and women's traditional southern lion.
Hosted by MGM China, the event was opened by guests including Asian Dragon and Lion Dance Federation chairman Chan Wing-kit, Chinese Dragon and Lion Dance Sports Association secretary-general Wang Yu, and MGM China chief operating officer Tian Han. Officials from Macao's cultural and sports bureaus also attended the closing awards ceremony.
Indonesia's team, six athletes from Medan's BBS troupe, competed overseas for the first time, and one of its officials served as an international referee for the championship.
Now in its 13th edition, the MGM Cup has become one of Macao's signature events linking tourism, sport and traditional Chinese culture.
