Chung Yeung Festival Doubles as Macau Seniors' Day; Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai Greets Elderly in Blog Post

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Oct. 18 is the Chung Yeung Festival, which the Macau government designated by executive order in 2017 as 'Macau Seniors' Day.' Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai published a blog post titled 'Respecting and Loving the Elderly, Walking Together' on his office's 'Macau Forward' column, extending festive greetings to all of Macau's elderly residents. Sam wrote that he himself is a member of the elderly group and understands their concerns; an ideal later life is not only about being cared for and belonging, but also about staying active and happy — the core philosophy of the government's elderly policy. He called on society to walk alongside seniors and put their accumulated experience to good use in building a better Macau. Census data shows the share of residents aged 65 and above keeps rising, making population ageing a key policy issue; the government has rolled out elderly welfare measures including pensions, senior allowances and community care services. Local associations held senior-honouring activities over the festival.
