Sibu Chinese Community Marks Chung Yeung Festival; Fuzhou Horling Club Hosts Celebration Luncheon

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Chinese clan associations in Sibu, Sarawak, held a series of senior-honouring activities around the Chung Yeung Festival. According to activity listings published by the United Chinese Associations of Sibu, the Sibu Foochow Horling Club held a Chung Yeung celebration luncheon on Oct. 18; the Sarawak Peng Cheng Lau Association held its 2026 Chung Yeung event around Oct. 17; and the Sibu Yingyang Cheng Association hosted a filial-piety gathering on Oct. 17, also presenting academic awards for members' children for 2025. Sibu, Sarawak's second-largest city, is home to a predominantly Foochow Chinese community — earning it the nickname 'Little Fuzhou' — and its active clan associations hold fellowship and senior-honouring events at every major festival. The Chung Yeung Festival is traditionally devoted to respecting the elderly, and the Sibu Chinese community's programmes reflect that heritage. Other upcoming community events include a 5-km charity run on Nov. 8 marking the 45th anniversary of the Sibu Chinese independent secondary school alumni federation, and a 'Pingnan roots-seeking cultural trip' plus a food fair organised by the Sarawak Pingnan Association.
