Spokane Wildfire Relief Grant Applications Close Today, October 18: $10,000 Per Household That Lost a Primary Home, Renters Included

SPOKANE, Washington - Applications for the Karen Worthy Memorial Wildfire Grant, created for households affected by the August 2026 Spokane Complex Fires, close today, Sunday, October 18. According to the grant program's official website, households whose primary residence was destroyed or declared a total loss in the Old Trails, Autumn Lane or Fairview fires may receive a one-time payment of up to $10,000. The funds are unrestricted and can be used for temporary housing, basic household items and other urgent recovery expenses.
The grant was funded by Spokane developer Walt Worthy in honor of his late wife, Karen Worthy. Grant distributions are managed and verified by the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group, a Spokane-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The program's official site states that eligibility is based on loss of a primary residence, not on income, immigration status, insurance coverage or receipt of other aid. Renters as well as homeowners may apply, and only one grant of up to $10,000 is awarded per residence. Applicants must provide government-issued identification and documentation of residency, such as a driver's license or state ID, voter registration, a tax return, a mortgage or lease agreement, or utility bills; applications are checked against a verified list of destroyed properties provided by FEMA and county officials.
KXLY reported that the program had received more than 700 applications, that organizers identified about 20 fraudulent claims while finding the vast majority legitimate, and that roughly 20 percent of households whose homes burned had not yet applied. The application period closes October 18, 2026, and applications are submitted through the grant program's official website.
