Shakeup Saturday: Top Two Seeds Fall on Same Day for First Time Since 2012 as No. 3 Miami Edges Florida State 43-35 in Double Overtime

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — College football's Saturday night turned into a shakeup: No. 1 Georgia lost to Auburn and No. 2 Notre Dame fell 28-24 to BYU, the first time the nation's two top-ranked teams have lost on the same regular-season day since November 17, 2012, according to Sportradar. No. 3 Miami survived a double-overtime classic at home, beating archrival Florida State 43-35 to stake a claim to the top of the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002 when the new poll comes out Sunday.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, the last a 3-yarder to Malachi Toney in the second overtime. "This is what great teams do, find a way to win," Mensah said. Toney had 11 catches for 154 yards and two scores and threw a two-point conversion pass after his overtime touchdown; Bryce Fitzgerald sealed the win with an end-zone interception on the final play.
For Florida State, Ashton Daniels threw for 298 yards and four scores, including Duce Robinson's 75-yard touchdown that tied the game with 2:49 left in regulation. The Seminoles disputed two late calls — a fourth-and-21 completion wiped out by a holding penalty and the final end-zone play ruled an interception after review — and head coach Mike Norvell voiced his frustration. Florida State (3-4) hosts Clemson on October 31.
Miami improved to 6-0 (4-0 in the ACC) and hosts Pitt on October 24. Head coach Mario Cristobal shrugged off the looming No. 1 ranking, saying it has no value to his team's process and that the only "1" that matters is going 1-0.
