Miami Returns to No. 1 in AP Top 25 for First Time Since 2002, BYU Rises to No. 2 After Chaotic Week 7

The Associated Press released its latest college football Top 25 on Sunday, October 18, with Miami (FL) rising to No. 1 with 1,697 points and 40 first-place votes — the Hurricanes' first appearance atop the AP poll since December 8, 2002. Miami (6-0) survived two Hail Mary attempts to beat Florida State 43-35 in double overtime.
BYU (6-0) is No. 2 with 1,675 points and 20 first-place votes after beating then-No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo, the Cougars' highest national ranking since 1984, the year of their consensus national championship. Notre Dame fell to No. 4. Ohio State rose to No. 3 (1,649 points, nine first-place votes) after a 19-15 win at Indiana that ended the Hoosiers' 22-game home winning streak, though quarterback Julian Sayin is expected to miss several weeks with a right throwing-shoulder injury.
Former No. 1 Georgia lost 27-24 at home to Auburn and fell to No. 5, marking just the fifth time a No. 1 team has lost to an unranked opponent in consecutive weeks. Fourteen ranked teams lost in Week 7, including five of the previous top eight. Indiana is No. 6, followed by Ole Miss, Texas Tech, UCLA and Utah.
Texas took the biggest fall, dropping 12 spots to No. 19 after a 27-24 loss to Florida in Austin; Florida re-entered the poll at No. 20. Alabama fell to No. 13 after a 26-10 loss to Tennessee, which rose to No. 11. Arizona moved in at No. 25 despite a bye, while Mississippi State dropped out after a 31-0 loss to LSU.
