Arkansas State beat Southern Miss 23-13 on the night of Oct. 17 at Renasant Bank Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, earning its first road win of the season. The Red Wolves improved to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Red Wolves' defense led the way, forcing two turnovers, recording three fourth-down stops and protecting the lead before halftime after a Southern Miss kickoff miscue. Kicker Clune Van Andel hit field goals of 29, 40 and 44 yards to pace the scoring. Quarterback Trey Owens went 17 of 25 for 170 yards, Kenyon Clay and Timothy Carter each rushed for a touchdown, Dontrey Henderson and AG McGee each had an interception, and McGee led the defense with seven tackles.

Southern Miss hurt itself with special-teams mistakes that spoiled comeback chances, including a botched 44-yard field goal attempt. The Golden Eagles suffered their fifth straight loss, and head coach Blake Anderson conceded afterward: "We made too many mistakes; they made almost none." Attendance was 22,585.
