Phase Three of I-10 Widening South of Phoenix Breaks Ground; Highway to Grow to Three Lanes Each Way

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Arizona Department of Transportation has broken ground on phase three of the Wild Horse Pass project south of Phoenix, continuing the widening of the heavily traveled Interstate 10 to improve capacity and safety.

Phase three covers about 11 miles south of Phoenix through the Gila River Indian Community. The work will widen I-10 to three lanes in each direction, add one HOV lane each way between Loop 202 and Riggs Road, rebuild the interchanges at Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, Riggs Road and Queen Creek Road/State Route 347, and build a new interchange at Koli Road.

An earlier Arizona Republic investigation identified the segment as a hotspot for cross-median crashes, and the widening and interchange rebuilds are expected to ease that safety risk. ADOT says I-10 is a primary freight and commuter corridor linking Phoenix with Tucson and California, carrying heavy daily volumes; once complete, the project should significantly improve rush-hour congestion. Construction is under way, and ADOT urges drivers to observe work-zone speed limits and lane changes.
