BYU School of Medicine Wins Preliminary Accreditation; First Students Arrive July 2027

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

Brigham Young University President C. Shane Reese joined inaugural medical school dean Mark Ott on Oct. 14 to announce that the BYU School of Medicine has received preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting body for MD programs recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Preliminary accreditation authorizes the school to enroll students and launch its MD program. The first class will arrive in July 2027, and applications for the inaugural class will open in the coming weeks. Reese called it a "historic day" for BYU, saying preliminary accreditation is a major milestone toward the vision of educating physicians who bless individuals, families and communities.

The BYU School of Medicine was announced in July 2024 by the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, founded on faith, rigorous academic preparation and service. The new school will be built on the west side of the Provo campus, the former Provo High School site, next to Intermountain Health Utah Valley Hospital; the new building is planned at about 275,000 square feet, with an architectural style echoing the Provo City Library and the downtown temple. Until the permanent building is finished, the first students will study in renovated space in the former Provo High School.
