Saguaro Toppled by Strong Wind Falls on Scottsdale Hiker, Knocking Her Unconscious

A woman hiking the Bell Pass Trail in Scottsdale, Arizona, was seriously injured on the morning of Oct. 17 when a giant saguaro cactus, toppled by strong wind, fell on top of her. Scottsdale firefighters treated her at the scene, according to azcentral; her condition had not been released as of 3 p.m. Fellow hiker Amy Johnson called it a freak accident: the woman was pinned under the cactus, which weighed hundreds of pounds, and was unconscious for five to ten minutes until companions pried it off her with straps. She suffered serious injuries to her left side from the weight and the cactus spines, a possible head injury, and at one point could not recall the year or who the president was. Johnson said the fallen saguaro looked healthy but stood next to a dead one, which may have left it vulnerable to the wind; as an experienced hiker, she described the experience as a humbling one.
