Delaware Starts True Freshman QB Tyler Bell, the Program's First Since 2001

Delaware has turned to true freshman Tyler Bell as its starting quarterback, the first true freshman to start a regular-season game for the Blue Hens since Mike Connor in 2001, Delaware Online reported Oct. 17. Bell, 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, is from East Rutherford, New Jersey, and attended St. Peter's Prep, where he threw for 5,064 yards and 65 touchdowns over three seasons as a starter while rushing for more than 1,000 yards. Originally committed to UMass, he flipped to Delaware, enrolled early and took part in all 15 spring practices. Head coach Ryan Carty said Bell has shown an exceptional work ethic since arriving: “Every time I walk past the quarterbacks coach's office, he's in there watching film.” Bell passed his first test, the report said, though whether he keeps the job long-term remains uncertain.
