PENSACOLA — Governor Ron DeSantis, joined by Florida Department of Commerce Secretary Alex Kelly at a Walmart in Pensacola on October 12, provided updates on Florida's recovery efforts following Hurricane Isaias and highlighted additional resources available to impacted residents.
The governor's office said Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed $1 million in funding and supplies for Panhandle recovery, providing free hot meals, mobile showers, laundry services, Wi-Fi and device charging at locations across Northwest Florida. Nine Points of Distribution are now open across Escambia, Santa Rosa, Walton and Washington counties, providing free bottled water, shelf-stable food and other essential supplies. As of 1 p.m. EDT, power had been restored to more than 70% of impacted customer accounts. Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin at approximately 9:30 p.m. EDT on October 9 as a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and gusts reaching 116 mph in portions of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The Florida State Guard deployed nearly 400 soldiers to support damage assessments, debris removal, roadway clearance, distribution operations and search and rescue.
