Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

HILO — Hawaii County has completed the purchase of 364 acres at Honolulu Landing on the Puna coastline for $3.7 million, placing the land under permanent protection.

The acquisition was authorized by County Council Resolution 286-25, adopted on September 17, 2025, and funded through the county's Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation (PONC) fund. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported that community members gathered recently to celebrate the completed purchase. Honolulu Landing sits on the Puna coast in the southeast of Hawaii Island; the land will now be held for public conservation rather than development.
