On Saturday, Oct. 17, during ESPN's College GameDay show ahead of the BYU-Notre Dame game, Carter Smith — a BYU freshman from Honey Creek, Iowa — won $3 million by making a 33-yard field goal in the “Kicking is Easy” challenge. According to the Des Moines Register, Smith, who was dressed as Spider-Man, was picked from the crowd to participate. He missed his first attempt, but on the second chance drilled the kick as the crowd erupted. Host Pat McAfee then crossed out the $100,000 figure on the oversized check and rewrote it as $3 million. The prize was funded by McAfee, Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith and others. Smith, a biology major who plans to become a dentist, told McAfee he had never played football but had a soccer background.
