Gov. Pritzker: Pentagon Plans to Federalize 300 Illinois National Guard Members

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a statement on Oct. 17 that the Trump administration plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard. Pritzker said the Guard received notice from the Pentagon on Saturday morning with an ultimatum — “call up your troops, or we will.” He called the move “absolutely outrageous and un-American” and a manufactured performance that would pull Guard members away from their families and civilian jobs. President Trump has long threatened to deploy troops to Chicago; the federal government has previously sent the National Guard to Los Angeles and taken over law enforcement in Washington, D.C. Pritzker said state, county and local law enforcement have been coordinating security at the immigration enforcement facility in suburban Broadview, where federal officials said 13 people were arrested during protests on Friday. “For Trump, this was never about safety; it's about control,” the governor said.
