Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Candidate Arrested on DUI Charges After Crash; Campaign Suspended

NEW BEDFORD — Shawn Oliver, 42, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Massachusetts and a New Bedford city councilor, was arrested on DUI charges on the night of October 17. According to the Standard-Times, at about 11:40 p.m. Oliver's SUV struck several parked vehicles near 448 Dartmouth St in New Bedford and overturned; five vehicles were damaged, two of them heavily. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital and then arrested on four charges: operating under the influence, reckless driving, a marked-lanes violation and speeding.
Oliver was held at the Ash Street jail on the morning of October 18 and released on personal recognizance at about 9:30 a.m. On the afternoon of the 18th, Oliver announced he was suspending his campaign, a decision the state Republican Party said it supports. His running mate, gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, had called on him that morning to suspend the campaign immediately and said he would formally ask for his resignation if elected, saying Sean was lucky to be alive and there is no excuse for drunk driving. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said in a statement that the charges were deeply troubling. (GSM, based on the Standard-Times)
