Summit Fire Reaches 32 Acres in Mount Jefferson Wilderness; Popular Trails Closed Indefinitely

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · States · GSM News

SALEM — The Summit Fire in the southern Mount Jefferson Wilderness in Oregon has grown to about 32 acres. On October 18 the Willamette National Forest closed, indefinitely, the Santiam Lake Trail between its junctions with the Pacific Crest Trail and the Dixie Lakes Trail, along with the Santiam Sno-Park; Burley Lake and Santiam Lake are temporarily unreachable, while the PCT mainline and the Santiam Pass trailhead remain open.

The fire developed from three starts detected on October 16 — one is out, and two burned together — the Statesman Journal reported. Crews are using a full-suppression strategy with helicopter bucket work and minimum-impact tactics; with autumn rain approaching, significant spread is considered unlikely. The cause is under investigation. (GSM, based on the Statesman Journal and Willamette National Forest notices)
